Superintendents’ 2016 Chamber Cup Challenge based on success of food drive at the Newport/Claremont Chamber Football Game in association with the NH Tackles Hunger event

Newport School District Superintendent Cindy Gallagher and Claremont School District Superintendent Middleton McGoodwin have issued a joint challenge as part of the Newport/Claremont Chamber Cup football game between Newport and Stevens this Saturday September 24, 2016 at 1:30 at Maryn Field on the Newport High School campus.

WMUR has teamed up with the New Hampshire Food Bank and the high school football community to tackle hunger in New Hampshire.  The Superintendents are asking fans to contribute canned goods and dry goods at the gate with all items to benefit the Newport and Claremont Food Pantries as part of the Statewide NH Tackles Hunger event.

“The NH Tackles Hunger food drive is a great opportunity for both communities to help the local food pantries enter the winter months with stocked shelves,” says Gallagher.  “Hunger is a reality in both communities and the Chamber Cup challenge allows us to highlight this need and to help alleviate it.  The families from both Newport and Stevens and Chamber members from both communities should be proud of this effort.  I know that Newport will rally for this important good cause.  I have great confidence we will come through to win this challenge.”

“Nutrition is not only important for children because of its direct link to all aspects of their growth and development, but also because proper nutrition at a young age impacts a child’s future health as an adult,” says McGoodwin. “Providing children with information, and access to proper nutrition at an early age, will also help them be more successful in school.”

“As Superintendent of the Claremont School District, I am very proud to support Claremont and Newport once again being partners with helping promote a better quality of life for our school districts’ students, and communities’ children.”

Several items are of particular need, including peanut butter, jelly, tuna, soups, pasta, sauce and canned fruits and vegetables. Please, do not bring food in glass containers.  Cash donations will also be accepted.

As with last year, the superintendents have agreed to wear the opponent’s school colors and to provide dinner at a future televised joint school board meeting.  The winner will be determined by which community has donated the greater amount of food.
